I came up with an idea to have a "one-stop shop" for the horses -offering dentistry, farrier, body work, and nutrition for anyone that is having an issue with their horse or just needing some maintenance done.
I will be putting together "Equine Wellness Days" every couple of months here at the ranch. People are welcome to haul in their horses for these events to have them worked on.
This past Saturday was our first event. We had two horses that needed extensive body work done. One was a Paint gelding that has been bucking off his rider. Debbie Wilkerson did a body work session with him that lasted at least a couple of hours. She discovered that he had a headache (from the large knot on his poll), huge muscle knots in several places in his neck, his ribs were in spasm, and his withers needed adjusting. Willard was very defensive at first, but as he realized Debbie was just trying to help, he became more relaxed and accepting of the work.
The other horse Debbie worked on was a mare I have up for adoption - Diva Star. She was having a very hard time pulling her right hind forward to put on the hoof stand for the farrier. So, Debbie came over and worked on her. Unfortunately, Diva was very protective of her hindquarters and would not cooperate with Debbie to allow her to check her hips for alignment or do any body work on her hindquarters. Diva does have a sore hock on her right side, so that could account for the problem with pulling her right hind forward. I'm ordering a product Debbie recommended called MBS (Muscle Body Soreness). I'll give that a try on her hock, and hopefully we will see some improvement. Debbie was able to work on some knotted muscles in Diva's neck and on her withers. We did a nutrition work-up and I am going to put her on some supplements that should help relax her muscles as well as her attitude.
Four horses saw the dentist and had their mouths put back in balance. 13 horses saw the farrier and got their hooves trimmed. All in all, it was a great day for everyone.
